Camel - Curriculum Vitae [2003] (DVD)

Curriculum Vitae recounts the history of Camel as told by original band members Andrew Latimer, Doug Ferguson, Andy Ward, and Peter Bardens — who sadly passed away just months later, making this his last recorded interview.

You'll see rare footage of the band performing many classic tracks from various stages of their career from the early 1970's to 2000 and hear a touching account of the challenges, successes, and tragedies that befell this tenacious group which has grown into a unique musical entity.

Over 30 years have passed since Latimer, Ferguson and Ward met and began this creative journey as The Brew. This historical account is made that much more special having come full circle with a reunion of the trio, captured on video and included as BONUS FOOTAGE. Together, Andrew, Doug and Andy tell amusing stories of their first meetings with great fondness. An excerpt of rehearsals during their March/April 2003 recording session at Little Barn studios will give viewers a taste of the all new, original material scheduled for release in late 2003. Eela Craig - Eela Craig [1971]

Now, there's a piece of music I haven't heard it in a while... Lucky that I found it somewhere in my phonograph collection, so I could once more remember the good times I had while listening to this album. Maybe the best Austrian Prog-Rock band ever, and one of the most influential Prog-Rock bands in the history, responsible for the Austrian progressive movement, with the prime mover Hubert Bognermayr (keyboards and vocals). This is their first album, and by my opinion, their best. After this album, followed "One Niter" ('76), "Hats of Glass" (’77), "Missa Universalis" (’78), "Virgin Oiland" (’80), "Hit or Miss" (’88) and "Symphonic Rock" (from ’95 containing the 2nd and 3rd LP on 1 CD). A warm recommendation to all Progressive Rock lovers, this is A Must Have! album. I hope You'll enjoy it, and will wait for your impressions.

I posted Dragan Dautovski Quartet's "The Path To The Sun" earlier on my blog, with some additional information about the music and instruments they play. And just let yourselves be guided by Eloy, wherever that may take you to... And no further comments are needed from me, so just enjoy, and don't try to express the feelings you'll get through the music, with words. It's impossible to do that.

R.I.P. Bo Diddley

Bo Diddley, the guitar master and rock and roll innovator known as "The Originator" behind the hits "Who Do You Love" and "I'm a Man," died yesterday of heart failure in his Archer, Fla., home. He was 79.

Diddley's syncopated, "chunk, cha-chunk-chunk, chunk, chunk" scratch guitar sound was so distinctive it became known as the "Bo Diddley beat" and went on to become one of rock's building blocks, used in everything from Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and The Who's "Magic Bus" to Bruce Springsteen's "She's the One" and U2's "Desire."

He was born Ellas Bates in McComb, Miss., in 1928, and raised by his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel, whose surname he took, becoming Ellas McDaniel at age 7. He landed the nickname Bo Diddley during his stint as an amateur boxer.

He formed his first band, The Hipsters, in 1951 and landed a record deal with the Chess Records subsidiary, Checker, in 1955. His first release was a double A-side single with "Bo Diddley" and "I'm a Man" - songs that, along with Chuck Berry's early work, would bridge the gap between rhythm and blues and the new sound of rock and roll.

Though he didn't enjoy the chart success of many of his contemporaries, Diddley, who was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1998, did carry a great deal of influence, even leading The Jesus and Mary Chain to immortalize him with the song "Bo Diddley Is Jesus."

"If Bo Diddley was English, I think he should be knighted," Tom Petty once said. "Actually, this country should build a monument in every state to Bo Diddley. Elvis is King. But Diddley is Daddy."

He was known not just for his songwriting, but in his actual guitar technique, which brought distortion and other special effects into the mainstream, through his use of handmade electric guitars, and in his lyrics and imagery.

The way he referred to himself in the third person in hits such as "Bo Diddley," "Diddley Daddy" and "Hey! Bo Diddley," made him a forerunner of early hip-hop rhymes. He even had a hit with "Say Man," a bit of verbal sparring with his maracas player that was an early form of battle rapping.

Diddley was also known for his live shows, offering incredible solos and coaxing otherworldly sounds out of his homemade rectangular guitars for more than five decades. Playing on bills with everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Clash and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Diddley maintained an aggressive touring schedule up until his recent illness.

He suffered a stroke in May after a performance in Council Bluffs, Iowa. On Aug. 24, 2007, he suffered a heart attack during a routine medical checkup after he complained of dizziness and nausea.

Diddley is survived by his children, Evelyn Kelly, Ellas A. McDaniel, Tammi D. McDaniel and Terri Lynn McDaniel, a brother, the Rev. Kenneth Haynes, as well as 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Russian Circles - Station [2008]

The proverbial wind that is always gusting from Chicago never seems to cease but in terms of its most promising musical exports, that breeze proves to be a piercing and chilling gale of heaving guitars and spacey resonance.

Formed in the Windy City in 2004, Russian Circles were born and from the beginning it was their concoction of metal trimmings, minimal jazz primers, and cryptic riffs that hit the scene out of nowhere with the pummeling impact of a rouge comet crashing in from the skies. Their music weaves up an intense and cinematic albeit soothing clobbering that cannot be put into words but instead into forms of audible head trips that defies pigeonholing. “There is so much categorization out there” notes guitarist Mike Sullivan. “I think our sound is just too broad to be labeled as any sort of sub-genre”.

Their self titled and self released EP from 2005 sold out shortly after their initial pressings. It wasn’t long before their 2006 debut long player, Enter, dropped with a booming impact and saw them sharing the stage with the likes of Tool, Dalek, Daughters and Pelican. Aside from their coinciding performance at that year’s annual South by Southwest industry showcase, which managed to drop jaws all over the Live Music Capital of the World, Russian Circles have managed to progress forward with a newfangled approach toward their live performances. Their lumbering layers of chiseled post rock and feathery psychedelic infusions have both revved and enticed the listeners into mental orgasms the world over.

Station, was recorded at Seattle’s Studio Litho with producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus the Bear and Isis.) When asked about the recording process Sullivan cites Bayles as a driving force behind the album’s precise synergy. “He’s intense in the studio but in a good way”. Joining Sullivan and Dave Turncrantz (Drums) on the recording was These Arms are Snakes / Botch bassist Brian Cook with Morgan Henderson of The Blood Brothers also lending his skills on double bass to the track “Xavii”.

If one aspect remained a summit that the band had scaled, it was making sure that the sequencing was spot on to give Station an “album feel” making it suitable for a cohesive listen from beginning to end.

While Russian Circles are picking up where they left off with Enter, Station is guaranteed to be a new passage for a band already known for paving their own unique paths of sonic tundra’s that jolt the mind and body and will not only leave it’s mark on 2008 but on the future influence of music as a whole.

In a few words, the album is a masterpiece, and the band is a true discovery!

Yahel - Hoenig - Moreno - Blake - Jazz Side of the Moon (The Music of Pink Floyd) [2008]

After the King Crimson Songbook, here is another Jazz tribute to a great band. This time, one of the greatest of all time - Pink Floyd. They say that "great musicians do tributes to greater musicians". In this case, the sentence is right. Sam Yahel, Ari Hoenig, Mike Moreno and Seamus Blake have done their best to show a descent, jazzy respect to their colleagues from Pink Floyd, and at the end, all of it to represent one of the best Pink Floyd tributes ever made. After the Vocomotion - Dark Side of the Moon (A Capella), Jazz Side of the Moon is the second PF tribute that is a Must Have piece of music. Tibet - Tibet [1978]

A German one-album band. Although they had only one release, this is a piece of music that any proghead should have it in it's collection. Tibet was formed in 1972 , inspired from bands like The Beatles, Third Ear Band... With complex fusion of astral rock, jazz, Tibetan instruments (tabla, zither ,flute...), this band stands side by side with bands like Kraan, Eloy... As I sad, this album is an excellent addition to any progressive rock collection.

Mountain - Climbing! [1970]

Mountain is an American rock band, popular back in the early 1970's.The band broke up in 1972, reformed shortly thereafter, broke up soon after that, and now has begun touring again in recent years. Mountain remains popular in some circles despite having fallen out of the mainstream during the seventies. Mountain was influential during the development of Hard Rock, and their hit song "Mississippi Queen" became a radio hit and a hard rock classic.

Their album features traditional Celtic folk-flavoured melodies that are given both a delicate and hard-rocking treatment: delicate in the form of melodic, mellow ballads, and hard rocking when Collins’s fiddles battle it out with McNally’s fuzzy, blazing guitar, particularly on traditional instrumental jigs. Although not as sophisticated and instrumentally accomplished as a FAIRPORT CONVENTION or a STEELEYE SPAN, for example, MUSHROOM’s release is still worth a spin despite the average sound quality, if only for the pleasure of hearing some vintage psychedelia given a nifty Celtic folk treatment. Note: the CD version includes the band’s famous mid-70’s singles in the form of 3 bonus tracks.

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori [1971]

Flower Travellin' Band were an esoteric Japanese psychedelic rock/ heavy metal outfit active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, consisting of Akira "Joe" Yamanaka (vocals), Hideki Ishima (guitar), Joji "George" Wada (drums) and Jun Kozuki (bass).

The band was initially organized by Japanese entertainer and entrepreneur Yuya Uchida as "The Flowers," a cover band, and featured a female vocalist, Remi Aso, who was touted as the Japanese version of Janis Joplin. Their first album consisted of covers of Western pop songs. It was primarily notable for the fact that all of the band members appeared nude on the cover, including Aso, which was considered scandalous at the time.

However, after the "Flowers" album, Uchida lost interest and Aso drifted away. The remaining members reorganized themselves, acquiring Joe Yamanaka as a vocalist on the recommendation of Uchida, and proceeded to explore a more original and rock-oriented direction. Wiki

Krokodil - The Psychedelic Tapes [1970 - 1972]

Krokodil was a Swiss band that emerged in the late 60’s as a blues-rock band that put progressive touches into their music. They were of German-Swiss extraction with bassist and guitarist Terry Stevens being the only foreigner in the band, coming form England. They were regarded as the Swiss version of the Groundhogs due to their first album. However, from their 2nd album Swamp they started to introduce a psychedelic sound to their music, a sound which is very much dominant on Invisible World Revealed. In that album they make use of mellotron, organ, harmonica and flute all backed up by an acoustic guitar which give the album an exotic and stoned feeling to it. The eastern and Indian influences in this album are present through the sitar and tabla in the 15 minutes suite Odyssey In Om. The blues here gives way to the psychedelics, ethnic sounds and vocal harmonies, but it is still there. Getting up For The Morning continues the same style (in a new label, Bacillus) but they became more succinct in their approach to composition and it was more of a song oriented album than its predecessor.
A band not to be missed by anyone who likes blues, psychedelic and ethnic in his music and does not mind them being mingled together. Even though they are tough to find, their 3rd album is very much worth the bother.Review taken from ProgArchives.

White Noise is an electronic music band formed in London, England in 1969 by American born David Vorhaus, a classical bass player with a background in both physics and electronic engineering. He was initially joined by BBC Radiophonic Workshop composers Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, both ex of electronic music project Unit Delta Plus.

An Electric Storm

In 1969 White Noise released the groundbreaking album An Electric Storm on Island Records. The album was created using a variety of tape manipulation techniques, and is notable for its early use of the first British synthesizer, the EMS Synthi VCS3. Amongst many oddities, the first track on the album Love Without Sound employed speeded up tape edits of Vorhaus playing the double bass to create violin and cello sounds.

'I use voices a lot too, but not as conventional vocals. I always use a lot of voices, and if somebody having an orgasm in the background is used as part of one of the waveforms, it makes the sound more interesting, without the listener actually knowing what they're hearing.' Although not initially commercially successful for Island, it has over the years proved to be a cult classic, going on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide, namechecked by such contemporary artists as The Orb and Julian Cope, influencing such contemporary acts Broadcast and Add N to (X).

"The Incredible String Band" was formed in 1965 by Scottish folk musicians Robin Williamson, Mike Heron and Clive Palmer, taking its name from an all-night folk club (Clive's Incredible Folk Club) run by the band in Glasgow. They were signed by their future manager Joe Boyd, then working as a talent scout for the influential folk-based label Elektra Records, and recorded their first album, titled "The Incredible String Band", in 1966. It was released in Britain and the United States and consisted mostly of self-penned material in solo, duo and trio formats, showcasing their playing on a variety of instruments. In a 1968 Sing Out! magazine interview Bob Dylan praised the album's "October Song" as one of his favorite songs of that period. The band broke up after recording the album, but reformed within a year without Palmer who had left for Afghanistan. In the meantime Williamson visited Morocco from where he returned laden with Moroccan instruments including a gimbri, which was, much later, eaten by rats.

They where formed in 1967 and signed with DECCA RECORDS around the year 1969. Their line-up included Dave Arbus (electric violin, flute, saxophone), Ron Caines (alto sax), Geoff Nicholson (guitar, vocals), Steve York (bass guitar) and Dave Dufont (percussion). Their sound is a mixture of jazz-fusion with many oriental influences.
Excellent album where you get an outburst of electric violin, flute and saxes combined with Bela Bartok and other classical, oriental and even gypsie tunes always of course on a heavy rock basis.

Formed in late 1969 by brothers Christian Descamps (vocals) and Francis Descamps (keyboards) and later joined by guitarist Jean-Michel Brézovar, bassist Daniel Haas and Gérard Jelsh on drums, this French symphonic progressive rock band, similar to contemporaries such as Genesis and King Crimson, is undoubtedly France’s most important prog band. Marrying prog rock influences with French folk and theatrical vocals à la Jacques Brel (Ange covered Ces Gens-là from Brel, and it turned out to be their first hit in 1970), Ange’s music, but mostly their lyrics, are second to none. Thirty years later, after multiple lineup changes, charismatic and theatrical frontman Christian Descamps leads the new Ange generation alongside his son Tristan on keyboards, Hassan Hajdi on guitars, Thierry Sidhoun on bass, Caroline Crozat on vocals and Benoît Cazzulini on drums.
The classic line up (except for the drummer which changed often) recorded many cult classics, such as « Caricatures », « Le Cimetière des Arlequins », and a series of masterpieces like « Au-delà du Délire », « Émile Jacotey », « Par les Fils de Mandrin » and « Guet-Apens ». 10 years after « Guet-Apens », the same lineup would reunite and release two albums, « Sève qui Peut » in 1989 and « Les larmes du Dalaï-Lama » in 1992. While being modern, these albums nevertheless captured the main ingredients unique to Ange. Their latest albums, « Culinaire Lingus » and « ? » see the band as inspired and pertinent as ever, as if Descamps had found the secret of eternal youth.

Aphrodite's Child - End Of The World [1968]

The short story of APHRODITE’S CHILD starts in 1968, when the Greek/Egyptian bassist and vocalist named Artemios Ventouris Roussos (Demis Roussos) and the powerful drummer Lucas Sideras were supposed to meet the multi instrumentalist Evengelio Odyssey Papathanassiou (VANGELIS) who had left his first group FORMINXS, but the first two were not admitted to England because they had no working permits but custom officers discovered photos and tapes in their luggage so they assumed the musicians intended to stay.
A few months later the three musicians join in Paris with Anargyros Koulouris (Silver Koulouris) a very competent guitar player and they decide to form a new band which was supposed to mix traditional Greek music with Western Pop and Psychedelia, but they ended doing much more than was expected.

Due to their financial situation they had to sign a terrible contract with a record company. Soon after the birth of the band, Silver Kouloris has to leave the group because he was called for his Military Service and only joins again for the recording of their last album 666, during these years Demis Roussos has to play guitar and bass. The best Macedonian folk musician Dragan Dautovski, had his concert 3 days ago here in Macedonia. The concert was important because D.Dautovski played an ancient instrument found here in Macedonia called Ocarina
This instrument is 6000 years old, it is found in the area of the city of Veles.
Here is a picture of Dragan Dautovski holding the ancient flute
The instrument is circle-shaped and it has three holes for making tones.
The instrument gives only 13 tones, but D. Dautovski claimed that he had found 3 more tones.
Below is the quartet's first album after Dragan Dautovski has left the group Synthesis. Dragan Dautovski was founder of this group, and first it was called D.D. Synthesis.
However, this album doesn't contains any tracks played on Ocarina, because the instrument was presented three days ago, as I said before.

Foltin in short, is an unusual cast, whose music is hard to define, and every attempt to insert it into a musical genre would not be very successful(ethno-punk, disco, klezmer etc.).
Foltin’s music is surreal, passionate and witty, characterized with a frantic dance atmosphere, which is achieved with the fast Macedonian rhythm.

Even though they use standard musical elements, their approach in creating the atmosphere is unpredictable and above all, original. In their musical identity, an anglo-macedonian hybrid, a collision exists between the East and West.
Their language is an imaginary mixture or phonetic imitation of the world languages like: Spanish, French, Romanian, and Portuguese? their ¨spontaneous Esperanto¨.
Foltin are describing themselves as pseudo-emigrant cabaret, and often their concerts are turning into real performances.
It is not a strange thing to imagine all that when you consider the fact that they have worked on a music for theatre performances, in which they are famous for using the ready-made ¨instruments¨ or creating ambiental sound with objects from unmusical primer function, construction of some kind sculptures and installations. Their last project is ¨Davy The Bowie + Fallen from Mars¨ - cover versions on David Bowie?s songs, sounding very special being performed by Foltin. Foltin exist since 1995 and so far released four albums.
They took part in many musical and theatre festivals in Macedonia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria and they have been awarded for their work many times.

The name Kraan was short, concise and meant absolutely nothing. Still the band was to become one of the most important and stylistically characteristic German jazz-rock bands of the seventies. Kraan was formed in Ulm (south of Stuttgart) in 1970. All members had their backgrounds in free jazz bands. Johannes "Alto" Pappert on his side had a passion for soul, but came to Kraan directly from a rock band. Their debut album was recorded in May 1972 and later released on Spiegelei in a colourful fold-out sleeve. It contained their basic live repertoire at the time (and also favourites for years to come) like: "Kraan Arabia" (a cunning jazz trip into Eastern music) "Sarah's Ritt Durch den Schwarzwald" and "Head" (an 18 minute long improvisation). A remarkable album, it was recorded in just three days at Studio 70, Munich. Instrumentally it was well-balanced between Pappert, Wolbrandt and the outstanding bass-work of Hattler, then just 20 years old but already a master of his instrument.
The two following albums, Wintrup (1973) and Andy Nogger (1974), were similar in style. They sold quite well, even gaining a release in the States. In those days, Kraan toured Germany a lot and were renowned for their great performances full of improvisations. The excitement of a Kraan concert was caught perfectly on Live (1975) - one of the best German live albums of all time! Improved versions of many of their old songs were included with extended solos. The album was recorded at Quartier Latin in Berlin in September 1974.
In 1975 Kraan made two tours in the United Kingdom and also appeared at the Danish Roskilde festival in July, now adding a fifth member: Ingo Bischof. He had previously been a member of Karthago. Let It Out (1975) proved to be a disappointment (for the band as well) and Bischof left at the end of the year. After one German tour and a third UK tour Pappert also left in August 1976 to go solo.

Wallenstein were one of Germany's best known "space rock" bands, clearly indebted to Pink Floyd but also developing a personal style of their own. Jurgen Dollase founded the group Blitzkrieg as an international group with Bill Barone (from the USA), Jerry Berkers (from the Netherlands) and Harald Grosskopf (from Germany!). Dollase had previously studied art and classical music. In late Autumn 1971 Blitzkrieg had the repertoire ready for an album, but as a British group already was using the name "Blitzkrieg", the German group changed their name to Wallenstein and kept Blitzkrieg as the title of their first album. This featured four very long tracks in a symphonic progressive rock style (all written by Dollase) and almost completely instrumental. Dense, complex and powerful stuff!
Mother Universe (1972) pictured Dollase's grandma on the sleeve acting as the grandmother of our universe. Musically this was a more dynamic album, introducing some quieter, folky passages with acoustic guitar between the more usual powerful and pompous electric guitar and organ outbursts. Jerry Berkers wanted to do more of these folky things, and quit Wallenstein to record his own solo album Unterwegs - which musically I find it to be in a rather dull singer & songwriter tradition. After Dollase and Grosskopf had taken part in the large scale projects Lord Krishna von Goloka (Sergius Golowin), Tarot (Walter Wegmuller) and the Cosmic Jokers-sessions, they recorded Cosmic Century (1973) in September 1973. This album brought another change of style, clearly influenced by Dollase's recent "cosmic" experiences. It was marketed as the first album by the 'symphonic rock orchestra Wallenstein' (text on the sleeve). It consisted of five refined symphonic rock tracks and a short piano piece. Dollase's strained vocal parts lowered the overall standard of this album, but apart from this the music was good! Sadly this was to be their last great album...
Stories, Songs & Symphonies (1975) attempted to bring in more conventional rock and jazz styles for a kind of extended fusion, but was largely an artistic failure. Only their adaptation of Bartok's music on "Symphaty for Bela Bartok" was of much interest. The rest represented Dollase's failed attempts to be a serious singer-songwriter. Wallenstein split in 1975 and Bill Barone returned to the USA. Harald Grosskopf was engaged as the drummer for Klaus Schulze, Ashra and more recently Central Europe Performance.

Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals by Frank Diez. Armageddon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10 minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People Talking" and "Open". Michael Nurnberg and Jurgen Lorenzen provided a strong backing. Armageddon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers Emergency.
